Adoption FAQs
Read our FAQs for answers to our most frequently asked questions about pet adoptions through Pets Alive.
- Where do the pets come from?
Pets Alive Niagara receives foster animals from shelters, some in Niagara and others in the USA and Mexico, that lack placement resources locally.
- Do the pets that you foster have a time limit?
There is no time limit for how long an animal stays in one of our foster homes. The animals will be with us until they are adopted. That being said, most of our cats are adopted within 14 days from intake. For dogs, it’s about 10 days.
- Is there an adoption application to fill out?
- How long will the adoption process take?
The full process, including submitting the application form, meeting the new pet and interviews can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on a variety of factors. Please contact us to learn more about what to expect from the adoption process.
- Can I bring my current pets to meet a pet I’m considering adopting?
For our adoptable dogs, they should meet all members of your family before the adoption process is finalized to ensure compatibility. And that includes your current pets!
For our adoptable cats, we do not allow applicants to bring current pets to the meet-and-greets.
- What if my new pet gets sick?
Once the adoption is finalized, you will be responsible for all medical bills and decisions regarding your pet.
- What if I am no longer able to care for my adopted pet?
If at any time you find that you can no longer care for your adopted pet and cannot find them another suitable home, please return the pet to Pets Alive as per the adoption agreement.
