About Zack
Zack is a sweet and delightful little dog with a spicy side that comes out rarely and in certain circumstances.
Having bitten in the past, Zack is looking for an adult-only home where he can be the only dog. His adopter will need to be capable of reading his body language (which can sometimes be subtle) in order to set him up for success.
Utilizing positive reinforcement techniques is an absolute must when it comes to managing Zack's sporadic resource guarding behaviour around food and toys.
Zack is otherwise very well behaved -- he is now housetrained (with frequent pee breaks), crate trained, quiet, and non-destructive. Zack lives with a free-roam house rabbit and would likely do very well with a cat in the home.
Although Zack can occasionally be saucy, he more than makes up for it with his generally calm and gentle demeanour.
Zack's dream is to find a patient adopter who is committed to continuing to work on desensitizing him to those stimuli that trigger his unwanted behaviours.

About Zack
Zack will guard toys and food, but somewhat inconsistently. He is very triggered by food around his crate and will bite if he feels that it might be taken away, but he doesn't have those issues away from his crate. He will occasionally growl around his food bowl, but only very rarely. Zack will snap if he thinks I am going to take away something that he considers a prized possession -- that could be a toy or literally a piece of trash. Other times, he couldn't care less about something being taken from him. It is helpful for him to be either distracted/redirected before something (particularly something of perceived value) is taken from him or simply prepared -- trying to 'snatch' something (anything) away from him would 100% cause him to snap/bite, but you can easily distract him and redirect his attention by calling him over, petting his head, and then taking the thing away with your other hand. He immediately forgets about whatever that thing was and isn't at all bothered. When he is playing with toys, it's unwise to grab anything from him if he's within biting distance, but he will give it to you willingly once he realizes that you're going to give it back (e.g., throw a toy for him). If Zack doesn't want you to play with him and his toy(s), he will sort of collect them in an area out of reach. That's his signal that he doesn't want to share and would prefer to be left alone to entertain himself. In other words, he will do his best to avoid conflict, but he has no qualms about using his teeth if you invade his space/threaten what he perceives as 'his'. He is actually mostly fine with other dogs around toys -- even when he thinks they are 'his' -- the most he will do is give them a little growl -- but his behaviour improved a lot after his biggest competition (Red) was adopted.

Why We Love Fostering
-
I love fostering because it's a great feeling knowing that I am helping dogs find their forever homes. Knowing that they are coming from shelters where they may never be seen, and helping them get adjusted to a home in Canada is an amazing feeling. Since I travel a lot, fostering allows me to get my doggie cuddles and nature hikes without the stress of owning one.
